Meet the Team
Ruth Dube
Our monthly Meet the Team series continues with Ruth Dube in the spotlight. We caught up with Ruth to talk all things Bid Management, travel and public speaking skills.
Interviewer: You’ve been a member of Crescar for two years, how has it been?
Ruth: Quick! It doesn’t feel like I’ve been with the company for more than a few minutes, and yet at the same time, I’ve been involved in a lot of different projects.
Interviewer: It’s safe to say that you’ve been kept busy! What have you enjoyed the most about your role so far?
Ruth: I’ve had a varied career in bidding across different areas of transport, but rail is my first love. Over the years, I’ve worked across heavy rail, buses and light rail, and was part of the team that secured four successful bus franchise bids in Manchester. I’ve also had the opportunity to work on some interesting projects across the world, and it’s always fascinating to see how different organisations and countries approach their transport needs.
After working in heavy rail and mobilisation, one of the biggest attractions of this role at Crescar was the opportunity to bring my skills and insights into a rail-focused position. As a PMO, I’ve had the chance to work on projects in the UK and across the Middle East. I’m currently based on a project that has me travelling to different locations to meet with our clients, so the constant mix of working on different contracts and travel keeps things interesting.
Interviewer: What does the day-to-day usually look like for you?
Ruth: It varies from project to project, but as a PMO, my role is to always have the full picture of where we are in the programme. This includes building governance and reporting structures so that we can be fully aware of what opportunities, challenges and risks are present, and what is comfortably deliverable in the bid.
I’m also actively involved in writing the bids, which often includes a thorough review of the client documentation to create a compelling project plan. My extensive experience in project mobilisation lends insight into my writing and planning.
We have a close, collaborative team culture at Crescar, and I’m able to lean on the experience of Shane Webster and Jacinta Alexandar to bounce ideas and strengthen my proposals.
Interviewer: This wide breadth of experience must be extremely useful to clients.
Ruth: Absolutely. Clients aren’t paying for someone to be learning in the environment. When Crescar comes onboard, it’s with the accumulated confidence and learnings from previous global projects. That consistency of knowledge translates into the tested and proven rigour of a thorough and trusted delivery plan.
Interviewer: Stepping away from the day-to-day, what are your future ambitions at Crescar?
Ruth: There are a few things I’m working on. On a personal level, I’m keen to improve my public speaking skills, and I’ve enrolled on a course designed to provide frameworks and advice on how to present with confidence which will be invaluable as I continue to grow in my role and responsibilities here at Crescar.
I’m also developing templates and frameworks for future bids using lessons learned to date to assist younger members and maintain quality and consistency across the works we complete.
Interviewer: On a lighter note, any travel recommendations or wish list destinations?
Ruth: I’m really keen to explore East Asia, so Japan, Korea, China are all very high on the list. I’m fascinated by the socio-economic development of these countries and keen to experience it first-hand.
Interviewer: Me too! We’ll have to exchange notes on travel itineraries!
Ruth: Look forward to it!
